That's why people are able to do such 'horrific' things that you describe. When the graphic fidelity in a computer game increases and things and npcs start looking like real things and people, players start to develop relationships with them and start applying real-world morals and ethics into their actions in the game. But that won't happen when you are staring at a bunch of square blocks sitting on top of each other.
