However historical accuracy should be observed as well. Putting someone in a position they never could be at due to their race, culture, gender, social status etc in a given time period, makes suspension of belief more difficult. In fantasy anything goes, but in actual historic fiction, accuracy is important.
There are plausible things, for example. Robin Hood having with him a Maghrebi Christian companion when he returns from the Crusades is unlikely, but it could be plausible. A black Jeanne Darc is totally ahistorical.
