The $50,000 dream house that you would buy would be in remote mountain areas which have very harsh winters and pretty hot and dry summers. Or both. And the winter is not the kind of Nordic winter etc which you can get used to - weather is ever-changing and you could sweat one hour, and get chilled the next. Frequent, strong, and ever-changing wind. Weather systems from the Atlantic and Mediterranean collide. Some houses may not have proper utilities. Some may be too far from vital services. Living in such locations is not easy and the only reason why people have been living in those locations was that they had to. Now that the cities and more populated regions can support more people and people don't need to do farming and herding in remote villages anymore, these regions are depopulating.
Anyone who is planning something like moving into such a village should do his or her research very well.
