That kind of attitude creates hellish social landscapes. The opposite of that attitude changes the world. Open Source software movement has literally upended the old way of doing things by collaborating with each other and helping each other. Even this very platform that you use is possible only because Open Source movement made it so cheap and easy to get and maintain server infrastructure. Otherwise no amount of money from upstarts could launch startups that could compete against the established old corporations and the Internet landscape would stay the corporate dominated dystopian environment that it was in late 1990s. Same applies to writing - if people collaborate, if people help each other, citizen-publishing flourishes. If they dont, the big players just monopolize everything and everyone else eats dust. Including you.
