Subscription model is not necessarily exclusive to Capitalism. You could have it in an anarcho-syndicalist economy as well. In respect to Capitalism, subscription model gained traction for simple reasons: First, people don't have lump money to dump on services and products anymore. Like how your wife will likely wont be able buy Adobe Suite for $30k. Second, things change - the chances are high that your wife may start using something totally different in 1-2 years. Which would make the $30k she dumped on Adobe a liability if that was the case - lock in because of sunken cost. So its much better.
And subscription model enables all kinds of things that were not possible before - Creator Economy in the form of Patreon monthly revenue for artists, creators. Open Source development in the form of freemium model like used in WordPress ecosystem. In the earlier model, none of those would be possible because only a fraction of people could dump large amounts of money on art, music creation or software. Causing a centralization of these activities in the hands of the minority who had the most money. With subscription model, millions of people can contribute to millions of different projects little by little, enabling those projects to come to life.
Subscription model has enabled a lot of things for the ordinary people. Its a major improvement.
