Spain is more or less a matriarchical nation.

People here are super nice and helpful. They warm up to us the second my wife speaks perfect Spanish and even when I try to speak — less than perfect — Spanish.

Spain is more or less a matriarchical nation. Your wife speaking native Spanish (even if latin American) makes her a cousin, if not a local, and you speaking broken Spanish makes you an in-law. A very advantageous position to be in.
