If they did that and actually acknowledged the statistics, that would break the 'Just World' hypothesis they have come to believe to be able to keep believing in the society they live in, and they would suffer cognitive dissonance.

They can't do that. Therefore, they have to either totally avoid searching, or claim that the statistics are false and you are a liar.

Because for them to keep thinking that things are 'okay' and not lose their sh*t, they have to keep believing.
