I think there could be hope if capitalism changed its values and priorities: profit is not monetary gain but benefits to society

Well... We have a name for that kind of thing already: Socialism.

The difficulty is that the capitalist system is geared to maintaining the owners of capital in power.

That's what capitalism is. Profit and ownership maximization. It cannot exist in another way.

But it was presented as a confrontation and struggle for power - the Class War - which reached the absurdity of trade union members sabotaging their own products and ultimately destroying entire economic sectors in the west!

It was called a class war because the very capitalists mentioned above were keeping down everybody to protect their power and privilege. They still are. Hence, the class war - because as even Warren Buffett noted, "Yes, there is a class war and unfortunately my class is winning".

So the other essential change needs to be replacing competition with collaboration. People motivated to cooperate to achieve society's goals can do so much more and better than competing entities driven by greed and fear.

Now moved from socialism to communism. Lofty and correct ideals...
