And they didn't care either - early 2000s web was still a continuation of incumbent feudal-like corporate landscape in which consumers - not users - were the ones who obediently took in whatever the corporations offered them in their good grace. Which was a replication of the existing corporation-consumer relationship, or rather, the entire economic system, into the Internet.

Open Source movement and the culture that sprung around that shattered that fossilized social structure and gave control to the users.
